Women and men Essay Non violence is a philosophy that has been used as a strategy to bring change. It follows a line which rejects the path of violence. This method of using an alternate to aggression and armed struggle against oppression has been preached and practiced from time immemorial. In recent times, non violence has been used as a means for getting India independence from British rule. This movement was preached and led by Mahatma Gandhi, who immortalized himself to the whole world with the way he went about it. Another fine example is recent history is that of Martin Luther King, who adopted Gandhi’s non-violent ways , in the struggle to help win civil rights for African Americans. Jesus and Non Violence History shows many examples of non-violence struggles, but if we look into our ancients texts we will be able to understand that even Jesus Christ was an advocate of non violence. Until the very end Jesus never renounced his privilege of being the anointed one. Nevertheless, he destroyed the wall that separated non-Jews from the God of Israel. He became the new and living way by which all people had access to the kingdom of God. By acting in this way he removed every pretext for the use of violence. He advocated that gods grace was offered to all and with it the hand of fellowship and the offer of reconciliation. (Walter Wink. Ch. 1. p119) Nonviolence in Theory Practice Nonviolence has always been understood as the absence of violence, but the leading proponents of nonviolence have always defined in positive terms. Thus Mahatma Gandhi spoke of nonviolence as Satyagraha , meaning literally holding onto truth. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke of it as a commitment to resisting injustice without regarding one’s success as a triumph over those 2 who stand for injustice. (Robert. H Barry . L. G. Nonviolence in Theory and Practice) Nonviolence can be understood from many viewpoints and has many aspects to it. To some it may seem as if it is the study of any psychological, social, or political technique to bring about social change, which does not involve the use of the military force, yet again to others it is the study of the spiritual pursuit of a nonviolence as interpreted by particular religions. Discussion There is a belief among many, that nonviolence is actually nothing more than a form of cowardice. Nothing can be further from the truth. In the case of Jesus Christ it took tremendous mental strength and will power to stand up for what he believed. Similarly, in the case Mahatma Gandhi, though violence was used brutally against his followers who were both women and men, by their belief in what they were doing they could bear physical beating and brutalities inflicted upon them by the British without ever losing sight of what they were expected to follow the path of nonviolence. Man has within him an inbuilt mechanism of self preservation and this manifests itself when he is attacked and being bodily harmed. This instinct takes over and counters the attacker by fighting back. The ability to resist this natural instinct and to stay on the path of nonviolence is a sure show of courage and strength. In the case of both Gandhi and Jesus Christ, they were dealing against oppressive rule. They could have chosen an easier way, but that they chose the courageous path of nonviolence . A SWOT and marketing analysis of Virgin Media Services marketing are a form of marketing which focuses on selling services. Services can be tricky to sell and the marketing approach for them is much different than the approach for products. Some companies offer both products and services and must use a mixture of styles; for example, a store which sells phone also tends to offer services such as helping people select phone as contract and providing broadband service and phone repair. Such a store must market both its products and the supporting services it offers to appeal to customers. When people market services, the goal is not to get customers to buy a product, but to get people to do business with a particular company, often in a specific location. For example, virgin media offers broadband and internet service: It provides phone, internet and TV service for the customers, both on-site and in to-go form in many cases. When the company markets itself, it must convince people that it is preferable to other broadband and that its facility is worth the trip. Virgin Media is an innovative new media company that was formed as a result of a merger between NTL and Telewest and then a re-branding as Virgin Media. Its main strength lies in the branding and the innovation that the name Virgin offers. Internally, Virgin Media is the only company in the United Kingdom that offers all four of the main media services, i.e. digital television, broadband, fixed line telephone and mobile phone packages. The ability to offer these products all together in one bundle is the unique selling point of Virgin Media and clearly sets the company apart from its competitors. Swot analysis Swot analysis is the most important and first stage of planning. It is a feedback mechanism to make new strategies for any organisation. Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats are the four components of a swot analysis. Weaknesses and Strengths are correlated and examine the internal part of the business analysis whereas Opportunities and Threats deal with the external environment of business operation. Weaknesses and strengths refer to aspect of marketing, finance, manufacturing or organisational structure. Swot analysis helps clarifies the objectives of the organisation Strengths In offering these combined services, the company has substantial economies of scale as it is able to combine many of its generic roles such as administration and finance, thus allowing the company to price more competitively for the benefit of its customers. Due to its perceived leading brand name in the media, Virgin Media has managed to secure an ongoing contract with Sky, extending further still its inclusive offering to its customers. Technical ability and infrastructure are also two of the key internal strengths of the company, which have been exploited to produce a market leading position. Weaknesses Despite this, the company does have some internal weaknesses that need to be managed. The merger between NTL and Telewest is still relatively new and there are cultural clashes between the two styles and the emerging Virgin style. In recent years, there have been several redundancies and outsourcing of customer services, in an attempt to bring down costs. This has resulted in a degree of unsettled behaviour and lack of loyalty from staff. Due to the size and complexity of the growing organisation, there are likely to be ongoing conflicts which will need to be managed if this cultural shift is not to impact on the customer experience. Opportunities and Threats Externally, the opportunities and threats facing Virgin Media are ever changing. The media sector is developing an exceptionally fast pace, resulting in both opportunities and threats for companies such as Virgin Media. Opportunities are widely available for Virgin Media, predominantly in offering value added services such as online gaming or more reliable broadband connections. Bundling these media services together, as Virgin Media has already done offers yet further opportunities within the media sector, in terms of grasping greater market share. Consumers like simple, one-stop shopping when it comes to the media options available; this is something that Virgin Media can continue to exploit, particularly now that it has signed an agreement with Sky. Threats to Virgin Media come from other similar media companies such as Orange or BT who remain as large players in the market. In particular, Virgin Media is rumoured to have difficulties with its infrastructure reliability, which could potentially allow competitors such as BT to increase market share. The media sector as a whole is extremely fast moving; therefore, the main threat is that Virgin Media may fail to keep pace, thus losing its customer base to another more innovative company. Payment: Customer may pay faster and more cheerfully if Virgin makes transactions simple and convenient for them. 2) Enhancing services: Consultation: Value can be added to goods and services by offering advice and consultation. Safe keeping: Customers prefer not to worry about looking after the personal possessions that they bring with them to a service site. Exceptions: Customers appreciate some flexibility in a business when they make special request. They expect it when not everything goes according to plan. Hospitality: Customers who invest time and effort in visiting a business and using its services deserve to be treated as welcome guests. User Preparation When implementing new system, it is important that personnel, employees, managers and others in the organization are prepared for it. This process is also called process of readying the decision makers, managers, employees, and stakeholders for a new system. In this regard, user training becomes very essential, because without it the success of the system cannot be guaranteed. This process of user preparation is planned and executed properly and involved a lot of arrangement, and consideration (Stair Reynolds, 2008). Virgin Media, the UKs leading fibre-optic broadband provider currently has almost 60,000 SME and public sector broadband clients, but has announced that it is looking to grow this significantly. Virgin Media has unveiled plans to target the small and medium business customers of its rival broadband giant BT. The move comes soon after BTs commitment to undercut Virgin Medias residential super-fast broadband prices, with its new fibre-optic broadband service which BT is rolling out this year. There is a very big market up for grabs, as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) spend about  £18bn a year on IT and telecoms. Virgin Media currently have revenues of about  £600m pa from business broadband customers and this is forecast to rise to about  £1bn pa in three to five years. Virgin Media chief operating officer Andrew Barron said: This is another step forwards. Weve been working in the business division for 18 months on getting the business processes to the right level. Weve improved it dramatically. We can use the fibre-optic network to differentiate ourselves. T.C., Saunders.J, 2000) Marketing communications are the means by which firms attempt to inform, persuade, and remind consumers directly or indirectly about the products and brands that they sell. A company s total marketing communication mix also called promotion mix (Kotler, 2005) consists of specific blending of advertising, personal selling, sales promotion, public relations, and direct marketing tools that are used by company to pursue its advertising and marketing objectives. "The burning must stop, the rocks must stop, people must stop being hurt," Yarbrough said after Tuesday's violent protests left five homes burned and at least 10 people injured. Police used tear gas to break up a crowd of about 300 people early Wednesday. Some of the protestors shot at police, and as many as 12 people were arrested, mostly on charges of civil disturbance and vandalism, Yarbrough said. "It was very violent," Benton Harbor Police Chief Sam Harris said. "We had gunfire. They shot at our trucks, they shot at the captain of police, ran barricades." The violence followed the death Monday night of a black motorcyclist in a high-speed chase by white police officers from nearby Benton Township. The motorcyclist, 28-year-old Terrance Shurn, of Benton Harbor, was killed when he crashed into a vacant building in a neighborhood near the city's center. City Manager Joe Patterson said the Michigan State Police are investigating the incident. Wednesday afternoon, police officers from several different jurisdictions began arriving in Benton Harbor. Some carried riot gear, and several reinforced vans called "peacekeepers" were parked downtown. The bullet-proof vans help protect officers from gunshots, rocks and bottles. Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm said about 130 state police officers are assisting local law enforcement, but she urged local leaders to come together to restore calm.

North-west Frontier Province and National Peace Award

Being only sixteen years old did not matter squat to Malala Yousafazi. In a short fourteen years, she has won fame for fighting for peace, womens rights, and humanity. Last year, she won the National Peace award in Pakistan for all her efforts. In 2009—at only the age of 11—she fought Taliban insurgency that tried to take over her village of Swat. She wanted to set up her own political party which would campaign the right of young Pakistani girls to education. This girl—this heroine—was shot by a member of the Taliban, in the head and the neck, and is now in critical condition.The Taliban called her work â€Å"obscenity†. I call it heroism. They tried to silence this girl forever—they tried, and are still trying, to silence the ideas of freedom and rights and equality forever. But they will not win this war, not while human beings like Malala Yousafzai breathe and fight. An army chief called Malala â€Å"an icon of courage and hope†. S he’s more than that, much more. She’s the dawn of a new generation, the leader of a revolution in which humanity and justice prevails over the whole world.Malala, she stand as a role model for every girl in the world, to fight for what we believe in, no matter what the cost. she’ve brought a beautiful gift to the world, and to Pakistan, the gift of belief; belief that things can change. her message does not go unheard just as her own ideas have never gone unspoken. They live secluded with their unchanged 18th Centuary culture away from the modern society. They live a peasant life without any modern gadgets. As Amish boy unconsciously becomes an eyewitness to a murder. Killers belong to the police force and are very powerful.An honest detective takes the responsibility of saving the little boy from the killers and busting the crime. He becomes successful ultimately. The main attraction of the film is the excellent picturisation of ? Amish? culture. Every frame brings out the elegant beauty of a forgotten innocence with a contrast of modern ? organised crime?. A small 5-years old boy, the ? witness? is no natural with his stunning performance. Their faith, clannish loyalty and social discipline are filmed with a visual perfection. No overacting, melodramatic scenes and unrealistic car-chase and fights.The effect of the story strikes our thoughts so forcefully but nowhere the characters overplay t heir emotions. Harrison Ford, as a leading character expresses the pain of knowing the killers in all his tired and agonized looks. Here crime is not glorified. Hard truth of responsible people turning into betrayers is depicted quite efficiently in this movie. I think of it often and imagine the scene clearly. Even if they come to kill me, I will tell them what they are trying to do is wrong, that education is our basic right. † â€Å"I have a new dream . . .I must be a politician to save this country. I want to remove these crises. † -Malala Yousafzai â€Å"They cannot stop me; I will get my education if it is in home, school or any place. † –Malala Yousafzai Malala Yousafzai is a 16 year old who has been advocating for women’s education in Pakistan since she was 11 when she wrote a pseudonymous blog for the BBC about her experiences living under Taliban rule. The Taliban controls the Swat Valley in Pakista n, and had attempted numerous times to prohibit women and girls from attending school.They have removed signs on school buildings and have even destroyed schools to prevent women from being educated. In her BBC blog, Yousafzai describes having to go to school while the streets echo with gunshots and being forced to stay at home because women were not allowed to attend schools, but studying anyway, even though she was unsure if she would be allowed to take her exams. In 2012 Yousafzai was riding on a bus home from school when she was shot in the neck and head by the Taliban in an assassination attempt.She survived this attack, and has continued to fight for women’s education in Pakistan. In an interview with Jon Stewart on â€Å"The Daily Show† from Oct. 9, 2013, Yousafzai said, â€Å"I used to think that the Talib would come, and he would just kill me. But then I said, ‘If he comes, what would you do Malala? ’ then I would reply to myself, ‘Malala, just take a shoe and hit him. ’ But then I said, ‘If you hit a Talib with your shoe, then there would be no difference between you and the Talib.’†Ã¢â‚¬Å"You must not treat others with cruelty and that much harshly, you must fight others, but through peace and through dialogue and through education. Despite being personally hunted down by the Taliban for her activism, Yousafzai continues to be wise well beyond her years. In 2011, she was nominated for the International Children’s Peace Prize and awarded the National Youth Peace Prize.Yousafzai also founded the Malala Education Foundation which assists underprivileged girls attend school. Next time you might consider skipping class because the weather is i nconvenient or you did not finish your homework, just remember all that Yousafzai has done and been through for her education and the education of others. She took a bullet at point blank range because she wanted to learn and wanted others to have the right to learn as well. I think it will be okay if you have wet shoes during class once in a while.

Describe the fieldwork and research you would undertake in order to investigate why some urban areas are in need of rebranding

When investigating why some urban areas need rebranding I would use a range of both primary and secondary data to see what the environmental, economic and social needs for rebranding were. Primary fieldwork I would complete whilst in the area would include: land use surveys, EQS’s, questionnaires, perception surveys, an index of decay and I would also take photos of the area. By using a wide range of primary fieldwork I would be able to see why the area needs rebranding in a range of ways. When completing a land use survey I would use systematic sampling as I would visit every 5th property then make notes on what the property was being used for used for or what service it provided. By completing a land use survey I would be able to see what services there are in the local area and I would also be able to see what state of repair the buildings are in. An EQS allows me to look at the environmental needs of an area as when completing it I am assessing the buildings, traffic, open space and gardens and the general quality of the area. To complete and EQS I would walk around the area and rate each quality on a scale of +2, high, to -2, very poor. Another way of assessing the environmental needs of rebranding is through an index of decay, this would involve walking round the area an assessing the physical conditions of buildings within the area and rating them. This would show the needs of rebranding as if the area is in a state of disrepair then people may not be attracted to the area so the cycle of deprivation continues. To complete both the EQS and index of decay I would use stratified sampling as we already knew something about the area. Opinion based primary fieldwork I would complete whilst investigating the needs of an area includes questionnaires and perception surveys. To complete the questionnaire I would use random sampling to ensure my results reflected a wide range of opinions. Questionnaires would provide me with people’s opinion of the area and can be used to show why rebranding needs to happen. If their opinion suggests that there are a lot of improvements that could be made to the area or that it is lacking services or transport infrastructure then this shows there is a need to rebrand. Questionnaires don’t only show the social needs for rebranding but can show the economic and environmental needs as well, it all depends on what they questions ask. A perception survey also reflects people’s opinions of the area; again I would use random sampling to gain a wide range of results. Perception surveys would allow me to quickly collect people’s opinions as they include close questions. The results would provide me with opinions on the area and also information about improvements people in the area wanted to see. The final piece of primary fieldwork I would complete whilst in the area would be taking pictures, I would take pictures to try and capture the area socially, economically and environmentally. By taking a range of pictures I would be able to see if the results from my surveys fitted what my pictures show. This would help when investigating the needs of rebranding as it would provide visual representation of the area and when comparing the results to an area that has been rebranded the needs would become obvious quickly. Also when investigating the needs of rebranding I would complete secondary research to see if it supports the findings from my primary research. However when using secondary data I would have to be careful that the information was up to date and wasn’t biased. I would use a range of sources to provide me with secondary data such as census data, checkmyfile, crime data, economic activity and government profiles. I would research census data to see how many people in the area are unemployed this would show the economic needs of rebranding. The census data would also provide me with information about the social needs of an area as the census data includes information about education and health care provision in an area. Checkmyfile would also back up the information from the census data as it gives information about unemployment and also gives information about the social demographic of the area. This would help when investigating the needs of rebranding as it could show that the demographic is a certain way because of a poor service provision. Crime data would show the social needs for rebranding as it would show if there are high levels of crime in the area and would give an indication as to how safe the area was. If the results showed there was high crime in the area and the community didn’t feel very safe this would suggest there was a need for rebranding. Economic activity would provide me with information about the local areas economy and where people spent money in the local area. This would help to show the needs of rebranding as if there were few services in the area then there wouldn’t be much spending, it would also show if there was a lot of business in the area. The final piece of secondary data I would research to investigate the needs of rebranding would be government profiles of the are this would provide me with a whole range of social, environmental and economic indicators. When investigating the need for rebranding it is essential that I compare the results from my fieldwork and research to the results of an area that has experienced rebranding so I can look at the differences which would be where the main needs would lie.
